Come one, come all! MartyParty aka Martin Folb will be performing in Vail, CO just after the New Year on January 9th 2015. Still in the NYE party mode? Don’t you worry, we got you covered. Keep your peepers open and be on the lookout for a ticket giveaway on our Facebook and Instagram! In the meantime, check out this interview we did with MartyParty over the holiday!
GG: Tell us why you got into EDM music?
MartyParty: I’ve always loved club music. I collected house vinyl in the 90s and got into hip hop and trip hop hard by 2000 and then waited patiently for dance music to evolve and embrace the trip hop vibes but never came so I decided to do it myself! I learned ableton, learned production, learned music by ear and practice and started making my own trip hop and dance music with no vocals but using singing synthesizers; I call that purple music. The rest is history.
GG: Describe your journey with PANTyRAiD.
MartyParty: The first music I wrote made its way into Walkersville to the West Coast, my first release, and then PANTyRAiD – The Sauce – Josh Mayer is a close friend and we decided to work on it together. We released it and started touring as PANTyRAiD. It really took off and we churned out our more albums, we had great tours, shows got bigger and bigger, and the rest is history! Watch out for a new PANTyRAiD season coming soon!
GG: What is your favorite food?
MartyParty: BBQ and anything home cooked with good Paleo ingredients.
GG: How is DJing as MartyParty different than playing with PANTyRAiD?
MartyParty: When I do MartyParty, I get to play all the MartyParty material I am constantly writing. It is more experimental and pushes music in all directions. It is like my laboratory! Many hits have come from the lab and the MartyParty live experience is really intense and dramatic. I find it to be operatic in nature, more like an electronic symphony than a DJ show. I have a trick way of using Ableton where I mix four channels of audio at a time live, with filters, which means I can dynamically manipulate four signals which creates a depth you cannot get anywhere else during the transitions. This is all very experimental and unique. It involves a lot of risk, which I love!
MartyParty: When I perform with Josh, it is a bigger production and there is less intimacy with the audience, but a much bigger audience and production which is awesome! So I get to experience both the in your face house party vibe and the big festival stage big room vibe. I am truly blessed with my two projects.
GG: How long on average does it take you to prepare a set?
MartyParty: I have always tried to play original music in my sets so I am constantly writing for the set. I add new songs and remove older ones in a cycle. I write songs as I need them, it’s a journey me and my fans have come to love. Instead of a few hits, I’ve focused on a body of party music crossing every genre and every dance style. This set has taken years to develop but new songs take days at a time. I just wrote an hour of music within a month that I have called it LatesTwerks on my Soundcloud and will always stream my newest pieces there. Then I move them to released albums once they are dialed in with live testing and the audience can always expect that vibe in my shows with some hits thrown in. Nobody does it like me
GG: What can we expect from you as MartyParty and a member of PANTyRAiD in 2015?
MartyParty: Early 2015 is going to be all about growing the brands and expressing the person I am. There will be lots of new MartyParty and PANTyRAiD music, lots of new shows; a fresh new kind of sexy. You can check out my new vibes on my Soundcloud.
GG: What is your favorite thing about performing at music festivals?
MartyParty: Festivals are where I make most of my new fans. Because I am independent and self-managed, I do not get the publicity push that labels and big brands do so I rely on making fans one at a time through word of mouth and festivals. I also love festies because I get to hang with my producer homies in great settings and often nature, which is my favorite!
GG: Are there times where you go on stage and don’t play the set you planned on playing?
MartyParty: My set is very dynamic, I don’t really know what I’ll play or in what order I’ll deliver the dose of vibe. I just configure it with all the latest material and go in! I love the challenge of getting through the songs in new ways and mixing in the classic vocal acapellas and sound effects to recreate the vibe with a whole new soundtrack.
GG: With EDM becoming more popular than ever, how is your style unique to other EDM artists?
MartyParty: I have always been different. Firstly, I play my own music and create a very unique melodic sexy emotional experience. Secondly, I don’t use hype and gimmicks to enhance my name. I have rather stuck to creating constant quality music and nurturing a fan base through word of mouth. This takes longer to grow but ensures a long term career. It’s just how I am as a person, humble and honest. I am a digital musician, not a demigod! I have always tried to deliver my music as an artist and not as a circus. The music always has a rich melody and storytelling, which is my trademark. All these things separate me from other artists. I am not trying to be like anyone else, I am MartyParty!
GG: Who/where are your inspirations derived from when creating a music set?
MartyParty: My background as a music fan is rich. I have lived through a lot of music and movements so I have a broad understanding of what is possible. My inspirations come from legends like Bob Marley and Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson and Depeche Mode. I love good music and that is what I strive for in the studio! My daily inspiration for creating music comes from regular life itself, the changing world we traverse, experiences, relationships, solo times, weed, acid, woman, friends, pets, you name it. As I live I am inspired to create and record the moment through my art.
Whether performing as a member of PANTyRAiD, or through solo performances as MartyParty, Martin Folb brings a fresh breath through the EDM community with him musically diverse, all original live shows that have been widely regarded as some of the best in the business!
