Stranahan’s Whiskey…pride of the Rockies

The GGStaff was fortunate enough to have our senses engaged, our tongues intrigued, and our belly’s warmed when we took a tour of Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey. Located in Denver, this native brand is the first microdistallary in Colorado since the prohibition. The smell of barley, oak, and fine whiskey filled our noses as we walked into the building for a tour.

Learning about the history of this beloved Colorado Company the GGStaff sat in a room reminiscent of a cabin in the woods. The Company was named after former owner, George Stranahan (who also owns Flying Dog Brewery) and former firefighter Jess Graber. Garber is still involved in the company although they sold it Proximo Beverage Corporation. After learning the history, the GGStaff was taken into the room where all the magic happens.

Known as “Rocky Mountain Straight Whiskey”, Stranahan’s whiskey will open your pallet to immense tastes. The ingredients are all found in the Rocky Mountains, including the barley, and Eldorado Water, which will assist in the fermentation process. After Fermentation, the clear wash that smells of intense rubbing alcohol is distilled in huge, copper, custom built pot/column by Vendome. The excitement of having a Vendome product was seen through out the staff as the tour guide said, “It’s like having Bentley make us a tri-cycle.”
The whiskey is than aged in a charred, American white oak barrel and placed in a climate control room. Their prized possession is their whiskey known as “Snowflake”, which goes for $100 a bottle. It’s available twice a year and is aged with a fine wine giving it a sweet and fruity flavor. They have people camp out in the freezing Colorado snow waiting to get their hands on at least one bottle of this fine whiskey.
Stranahan’s makes around 2500-3000 bottles a year. Each bottle is filled by volunteer hands that sign up on their website. The filling of these whisky bottles just sounded like a 80’s loving, beer drinking, pizza eating, party. We approve! Every label that goes on a bottle of Stranahan’s is hand written identifying the distiller, batch number, the youngest barrel in the batch and a unique comment.
By far the GGStaff’s favorite part of the tour was the taste testing!!! We learned to identify the flavors, texture, and importance of adding just a single drop of water. The staff was friendly, informative, and genuinely seemed happy to be there. You too can experience was the Grimey Gatsby did by signing up for one of their tours on their website. Stranahan’s sure makes it easy to support local Colorado Products.
