The Bunny Gang

Monday nights in Denver aren’t usually known to be a great night for live music, but this week was a different story. The GGstaff headed down to 3 Kings Tavern  to see The Bunny Gang, an amazing rock-reggae project featuring Nathen Maxwell of Flogging Molly. Upon entering into the club, one of the band members who is a friend of the GG staff greeted us with open arms and a welcoming smile. We were introduced to the rest of the band members, all who were friendly, and just as interested in meeting us as we were in meeting them.

The Bunny Gang is made up of Nathen on the guitar, melodica player, and lead vocals. His dad, Maxwell {maxwellvision}, a well known local artist with artwork hanging around Denver, plays drums and percussion. Michael Peralta plays the bass and vocals, and Nat Nelson is on guitar along with vocals. Together in 2009 Nathen and Maxwell recorded “White Rabbit,” a 10-track disc that found Nathen taking on a different sound from Flogging Molly, resulting in an acoustic romp with reggae, rock and folk influences. In 2012 they became The Bunny Gang and recorded their debut album that is coming out this summer. Produced by Ryan Hewitt (Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, Avett Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Joe Cocker) the new sound hits hard with edgy influences from rock, punk & reggae and has been described as conscious rebel music, and the sound of the revolution.

As soon as the band entered the stage and fired into their first song, “The Reckoning,” from their upcoming LP, the crowd moved toward the front of the stage and immediately began swaying to the music. It was an emotion evoking set that included both songs from the “White Rabbit” album, as well as some of their newest tracks. The bands level of energy, commitment to the audience, and fun spirit left the audience wanting more. After wrapping it up the guys came off stage and hung out with everyone for the rest of the evening.

There certainly was not a shortage of great music or good company on this particular Monday night in Denver! This is the real deal for this quartet and as they continue to play more shows and tour around the world, we will definitely be following along with them. To date, the group has toured around Europe and Japan, as well as both the coasts in America.
