JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound – GG Interview
Formed in Chicago in 2007, JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound consists of JC Brooks (lead vocals), Andy Rosenstein (keys, vocals), Billy Bungeroth (guitar), Kevin Marks (drums, vocals), and Ben Taylor (bass). This post-punk soul quintet have toured extensively in North America and Europe, and have gained a dedicated following while doing it. JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound may describe themselves as a post-punk soul band, but their sound is much more expansive than that. We were fans of the 2011 release, Want More, and the new release, Howl is the groups next chapter of their soul sound evolution. They’ll be playing Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach CA tonight, or check here for their other tour dates. GG got a chance to talk with keyboardist Andy Rosenstein about JCUBUS and what to expect from them this summer.
GG: What influence do you and the band use for writing and composing music?
Andy: I can’t speak for the whole band, but sometimes it’s experiences in your life, things you’ve heard, things you’ve read. Other bands, movies, daydreams.
GG: What should we look forward to this summer from you and the Uptown Sound?
Andy: We’ll be touring all over the country supporting our new record Howl.
GG: Favorite food to eat on the road?
Andy: I try to eat as many vegetables as possible when I travel. They can be surprisingly hard to come by, and junk food is everywhere. Takes a bit of effort.
GG: What festivals will you be playing this summer?
Andy: We just played the Ink and Iron in Long Beach CA with Iggy and The Stooges. And we’ll be hitting Firefly out east with Tom Petty, The Chili Peppers anda bunch of other great acts. Those are the big ones.
GG: Anything advice for people trying to come up in the music industry?
Andy: It’s not much of an industry. If you can be happy while doing anything else, get out. Otherwise, try to do something to make yourself stand out, and network your ass off.
GG: 4 dead musicians you would like to perform with?
Andy: Too tough. How about five who are dead inside? Rod Stewart, Brad Paisley/L.L. Cool J, Amanda Bynes, and Chevy Chase.
GG: Any grimey stories from the road you can share with us?
Andy: If a hotel/motel has a number in its name, the rooms probably smell like mold. Whenever possible, I like staying at the Red Roof Inn. I don’t know if that company just got bought out or whatever, but they all seem recently renovated. They’re at least 50% less murdery than Motel 6s.
GG: When will you be hitting Denver & Colorado next?
Andy: We don’t have any more CO dates on the books, but it’ll probably be in the fall.
GG: Are you GGFam? Andy: I don’t know what that means, so probably not. I am GGG.
GG: What’s your favorite hobby when you are off the road? Andy: Seeing my girlfriend, family and friends. Sleeping in my own bed. Exercising, eating well. That’s about all the excitement I need off the road. And crack. Lots of crack.
