Dubskin – GG Interview
We recently got a chance to sit down with Cory Eberhard of Dubskin at the GG headquarters to talk about what the group has been doing recently and what’s next for them. They’ve got a lot of shows planned for the Colorado area this summer/fall, make sure to check them out!
GG: When did Dubskin start?
Dubskin: In 2006,we started right around the time Pretty Lights was starting to play live. Jamal and I were living together and started getting together musicians that wanted to play some reggae. It was a natural process to just see what we could make. Then Derek and I lived together and he actually produced our first album. Since then it’s been continual writing, recording, shows and getting better…
GG: How many states have you played thus far?
Dubskin: We have only played like 12 I believe? West and Mid West mostly besides Camp Bisco but we’ve focused on our home state of Colorado while we write and record and get dialed in…
GG: What inspirations do you all use for writing your songs?
Dubskin: I don’t think we go in with ”inspirations” as far as outside things. We have music in us and coming through us and our inspiration is just to make it. We like music, making it, playing it and get stoked when it comes out nice. As far as musician influences those are too long to list from many different genres but the goal is to sound original and not copy sounds so we try to avoid that. A little herb can inspire one to want to start writing though, that’s for sure.
GG: What’s next for Dubskin this summer/fall?
Dubskin: We’re currently writing/recording for the next release while playing regional shows and fests like Alpha Blondy, 710 Cup, Unify Festival etc. After that we hope to give yall some new music and spread it further and further every day til we can travel with it and come play for you. What’s next after that is great question. If yall can read the future let us know!
GG: When’s the new album come out?
Dubskin: TBD. Still adding songs, trying new things…I’m stoked on the sounds so far but it’s still a sprout.
GG: Where can we see you play this summer?
Dubskin: Colorado. Home state. All dates at dubskinmusic.com/tour but we’re always adding things. Get us out to your neck of the woods all you people who want to dance to some DubSkin sound??
GG: How did the “Herbal Healer” video come to be? How did all of those great brands all come together in the video?
Dubskin: That was a surprising synchronicity, natural coming together of multiple talented Colorado people doing their thing. With myself working with Pink House and being around amazing grows and products I one day asked the chief if we could film it.
He was cool with it and some other great Denver peeps American Buffalo productions were friends and making cool music videos and so it was a no brainer. DubSkin has one ganja tune and we wanted to show the world what exactly is going on in Colorado so we united the clans. Yall need to peep the ”Herb Healer” video if you ain’t seeent it!
GG: Whats your favorite food on the road?
Dubskin: Great question. Avoiding gas station food is first and foremost. Free venue food seems to creep in a lot which is usually not a good idea either. Then you go for quick burrito, pizza type things and that can take a toll. The best is finding good Asian food and sushi and PHO and keep it light and tasty. But it’s a battle. Time and kitchens don’t seem to have all access passes…I never see em’ on the road.
GG: Words of wisdom to young reggae artists?
Dubskin: To all artists not just reggae I say do your thing. Make what you make. Make your sound. If it’s been done no need to copy it to have people like it. If you make good music people will gravitate to it. Especially in reggae people think there is this
set sound you have to have when there is so much space left in reggae to explore. Bands like JBB, Groundation, Thunderbody, Easy Star all do good jobs of that in my opinion. Jamaica is Jamaica and it’s great but rep your own sound and style…
GG: Are you GGFam?
Dubskin: We are GG fam.
