Wander Away From the Everyday
If you happened to wander up to Copper Mountain this 4th of July weekend, you were met with more than the standard summer resort fare of mountain biking, golf and hikes. You would also have found a pop-up community of yogis practicing asana, connecting to nature, soaking up wisdom and shaking their root chakras (AKA bootys). Welcome to Wanderlust Colorado.
This yoga and music festival, which originated in Tahoe, has now spread to 7 festivals internationally, 2 yoga studios, and 4 Yoga in the City events. Grimey Gatsby, of course, fell in love with the local event…nestle a weekend of yoga, rock-climbing, connection and joy into the Rockies, and you’ve got us on board. Guided hikes and excursions such as climbing, rafting and mountain bikes gave participants the chance to feel the rush and embrace the outdoors culture of Colorado. The magnificent landscape also set the tone of awe, gratitude, abundance and love. The more we all dropped into our bodies, and into this precious Earth body, the greater the energy and the more powerful the healing. In fact many lectures and workshops were focused not just on personal healing but on societal healing and ecological healing through better food systems and more sustainable lifestyles.
Lifestyles of all sorts, and practices of all varieties were met readily by a vast array of course offerings providing a full range of yogic experiences. There was everything from super-charged sweaty vinyasa and kinetic trance dance, to restorative and meditative practices, to workshops targeting specific poses or body parts. Some of the outdoor excursions, such as the rock-climbing outing led by Earth Play Retreats and Rocky Mountain Guides, even incorporated yoga as well. There were guided meditations, sound healings, and playshops on communication and intimacy. Not to mention the SpeakEasy, home to talks on everything from Diabetes to Surfing. We loved the live accompaniment to classes by musicans such as East Forest and Jeff Liffmann, the wonderful adornment of the practice spaces by Altar Your Reality and the ever-evolving sacred mandala installation by Scott O’Keefe and his team– all of which contributed to the wonderful atmosphere of healing and community.
This year’s musical performances were an eclectic mix. There was spiritual gangster MC Yogi dropping conscious rap lyrics over beats from DJ Drez (who also spun our favorite late night set). Quixotic Fusion awed and amazed with their densely layered offering. This troupe brings so much to the table: from costumes to projection to instrumentation-and of course, those breath-taking dancers. On Saturday night Moby had The Greatest Place rocking in grand fashion, dropping big electronic sound and getting everyone moving….but the real show-stopper was Caravan Palace on Friday night. This vibrant ensemble from Paris had a captivating gypsy throw-back vibe. Lindy hoppers on stage, an epic live band, and that vixen of a pixie they call a lead singer. Très Bon!
If this sounds like your type of weekend, keep in mind that there are 3 more Wanderlust Festivals this summer! Wanderlust California happens July 18-21, Whistler is August 1-4, and Tremblant occurs August 23-25. Plus Wanderlust Oahu (February 28-March 3) and Wanderlust Chile (February 15-17) for those who wish to wander further from home.
