Nathan Ledyard – Interview

Nathan Ledyard Art

Art is placed on many mediums. Waves are something that are not easily sculpted or painted. The definition of color needs to be perfect, the background has to be impeccable, and the overall piece needs to be comprehensive and encompass the motion of the wave with the stillness of water. Nathan has been working on his art for many years but last year he transitioned to wood from canvas. He carves the waves into the wood and then paints the realism. The images could never show the true work put into these pieces of art. He has been donating his work to charity efforts in Denver for the Typhoon Relief in the Philippines. We were able to see his work “Gold on the Ceiling” (pictured below) at Project Pearl last month. He passion for the water is undeniable and he is refined with his wood work. One day we hope to have a Ledyard hanging in our office.

“I met Nate many years ago in San Diego. We used to talk over music, the ocean, life, and the beach. It was a great time and ‘the dream’ was alive. Nate lived in PB and surfed. We all hung out and enjoyed the lifestyle. The parties were legend and the friendships have lasted forever,” Hunt said of the days in San Diego. Enjoy the interview below, make sure to check out his Facebook and Instagram for more images and works in progress.

Paintings and wood carvings inspired by the ocean, surf, travel and nature.”

When did you start with your wavescapes?
I first started painting waves after my wife and I went to Indonesia for our honeymoon in two years ago. The trip was epic and inspired me to start painting ocean scenes. I started off doing canvas paintings, but I really came into my own when I switched over to carving and painting wood last Fall.

Do you live near the beach?
5 blocks to the beach, 5 minute drive to the reefs!

How long have you been surfing?
Well, I grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania, so I never had the chance to surf when I was young.  I first started surfing in my early 20’s when I had the opportunity to travel. I was totally hooked and being land-locked on the East Coast just wasn’t going to work, so I moved to San Diego in 2005.

Favorite break?
Hospitals and Blacks here in SD.

Best place to eat in San Diego?
Tough call…there’s a lot of good grub around here. I’m big on the fish tacos at Fish Shop in Pacific Beach, and Carnitas Snack Shack is the bomb.

What is your inspiration aside from “the wave” itself?
So much about surfing is inspiring to me. Aside from the waves, I just love being out in the water and enjoying the ocean and nature. I also get a lot of inspiration from other artists, photographers and musicians.

What music are you listening to these days?
Anything with soul. Lately a lot of blues, funk, and Afro beat. I love listening to Fela Kuti when I’m doing art.

Where can we find your art?
Facebook is my bread and butter. Also instgram @nathanledyardart.

Any shows coming up?
Nothing on the radar for this winter, but I’ll being doing a few shows here in So Cal starting in the Spring. I got to show my work at the after party for the U.S. Open of Surfing last summer, so hopefully I’ll be invited back next year.  It’s nuts.

Travels in the near future?
Yeah I’m super stoked to go snowboarding in Montana and Tahoe this winter. I’m also starting to work with galleries in Hawaii so I’m hoping to get out there this year too.

Any tips for up coming artists?
I think Bruce Lee put is best: “Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, and add what is uniquely your own.”

Are you GGFam?
Most definitely.
