The Pharcyde – Cervantes Re-Cap
California-based hip hop legends The Pharcyde came to Denver and conquered, selling out Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom on Friday, February 28th.
The Pharcyde took the stage around 11:45 and opened with their hit “Ya Mama”, throwing it back to 1993 to start the night off right. Although only two of the original members, Bootie Brown and Imani were present, they brought the energy of all four OG members of the old school group we’ve come to love. If there was any question as to whether or not they’d be able to give a performance worthy of their earlier years, the answer came within the first ten minutes. The duo pulled off “Ya Mama” flawlessly and transitioned into the next song, with the crowd singing right along – “awwww, shit”.
After taking a few minutes to thank the fans and complimenting Denver on “keeping it green”, Brown and Imani continued to rock the rest of the set, playing some new stuff, as well as old favorites, like “Drop”, “Passing Me By”, and “Runnin”, produced by the late & great J Dilla.
Overall, it was a great show and refreshing to see an old-school group still killin it!
