GoPro Mountain Games Slopestyle MTB in Vail, ColoRADo
GoPro Mountain Games
The country’s largest celebration of adventure sports, music and the mountain lifestyle returned again this year with some epic events. This is a unique competition since it brings both Professional and Amateur outdoor athletes from around the world to compete in 9 sports and 25 disciplines throughout 4 days in the beautiful mountains of Vail Colorado.
Being involved with the games for the last several years has been awesome to say the least, in particular the Slopestyle Mountain Bike event. The level of progression has been intense throughout the sport and my favorite thing to watch is our local Colorado shredders on the same stage as the big guys for one day of playing bikes. When it comes down to it, we are immersed in a pretty small world of men and women who live to ride and it’s a passion that can’t be tamed. It also makes for a rare breed of friends who all compete, yet cheer each other on and strive to further advance this great sport.
This video will give you an idea of the course, fun atmosphere and talent of this competition. Also pay attention to the end where local Dominic Megalli hucks a double back flip after qualifying was over to hype the crowd.
The GoPro Mountain Games is a SILVER event in the Freeride Mountain Bike World Tour and this year the winner recieved a “Wildcard” entry to RedBull District Ride in Nurnberg, Germany. Previous builder G.A.S.S Parks was at it again this year but was shorted on time, dirt and other factors, but that didn’t stop any of the riders from throwing down some savage tricks. Below, locals Dj Brandt and Kelsey Hoog both qualified for finals with some very unique tricks and super stylish execution.
Josh Holt placed second with two amazing runs featuring a Decade as seen below, as well as back to back Double tail-whips in both directions! Josh was fresh off competition on his smaller 20” BMX bike in France at FISE, a truly talented rider on any bike.
Carson Storch had one of the cleanest, most stylish runs in finals, seen here floating a 360 off the box.
Finals brought many technical and stylish runs throughout the field including last, but certainly not least, winner Garret Robertson completing the open loop! He continued on to trick the last 2 jumps clean and was awarded the RedBull wildcard from District Ride course designer Aaron Chase.
