Jurassic 5 & Dilated Peoples – Recap
It was a hot day in Denver and an even hotter night at the Ogden Theater in Denver on Monday, July 21st when the GG staff hit up the first of two nights of J5 and Dilated Peoples. Jurassic 5 had just ended a six-year hiatus last year, returning to perform at Coachella, so this year’s 20th anniversary tour was sure to be a treat.
It was an early show on a Monday night, and we arrived a bit late, around 9, just in time to catch Dilated Peoples taking the stage and begin their energy-packed performance. Favorites such as ‘Neighborhood Watch’, ‘Live on Stage’ and the world-famous ‘Worst Comes to Worst’ hyped the already adoring crowd, and and even Evidence tracks, produced by the likes of DJ Premier pleased both the dedicated Dilated followers, as well as every other hip hop fan in the audience. The highlight of the show for many was the solo set by DJ Babu. The unassuming producer/DJ added an additional dimension to the hip hop performance with a scratch interlude that rap gigs on their own can never match.
Finally, around 10:30, it was time for what we had all been waiting for – Jurassic 5 took the stage.
It was as if they never left. What year is it again? 1994? 2004? 2014? Who cares – J5 is killing it right now. Every rhyme, scratch and beat landed right where it should. Chali 2na picked up right where Marc 7 left off. It was a flawless set that demonstrated how Jurrasic 5’s success comes from the funky vocal and mixing styles that each member brings to the group. All the classics were included – Quality Control, Jurass Finish Last, High Fidelity, Contact, and DJ Cut Chemist treated the audience to a five-minute mixing session which featured several bizarre instruments and gadgets – and MCs Chali 2na and company ended the show with a freestyling demo that blew the house down. The art of freestyling over some dope scratching was the perfect end to a night of amazing old-school hip hop.
