Keeping it Grimey with Planes!
Planes! The group that consists of MC’s, deejays, videographers and other creative giants, are one of Denver’s hottest breakout groups. Throughout history hip-hop groups have pioneered the landscape of the genre, though the art of the crew was phased out for a number of years. Wu-tang Clan, OutKast and others have continued being the driving force behind rap crews but it’s been in only recent years we’ve seen a resurgence from these groups.
JT Running Man, Lennex Dublyn, DJ MakeTrix, Ace, Déjà vu, Just Pounds and other Planes! Affiliates are aiming to change that concept. The debut album New Batch caught my eye immediately because of its hard-hitting beats and rhymes tinged with just enough flippancy to garner rambunctious appeal, Planes! Were a perfect addition to the Roux Black mixtape. The guys showed up to my office with a brand new song on CD within days of the agreement for their inclusion. “Richie Rich” is a perfect club track with street appeal, all while maintaining an underground swagger Planes! Is used to.
2014 has been a breakout year for the crew, having shared the stage with Cyhi Da Prince and performed at the Westword Music Showcase, Planes! Are the ones to watch. We kept it grimy with the crew over blunts and hilarious conversation. Check out who the crew thinks are the best rappers in the city, some of their most rowdy moments, and of course, the introduction to “Richie Rich.”
How many of you have ever been in a bar fight?
JT: Lexo has for sure. Well I was in a house party brawl. We were at a house party for Halloween and long story short, security started tripping with us and I told D to hold my 40 and it got really crazy.
What’s the grimiest circumstances under which you performed?
Group: Maxim Lounge
Just Pounds: Purple and orange.
Déjà vu: Blue
Who are the top five rappers from the state that do not include any members of Planes!
Ace- Trev, F.L. Catch Lungs, Mr. Midas and PDS.
JT-Trev, PDS, AP, Catch Lungs, Mr. Midas.
D Maino: Mr. Midas
Lexo- PDS, Typhy, Catch Lungs, Trev Rich, 2Bigg, Colfax Cac (for the old school heads who remember Cac)
Just Pounds: PDS, Typhy, Mr. Midas, Trev Rich, Arapahoe Trues
If you could sum up Planes! In one sentence and that sentence is…..
Group: Weed smoking rapping ass music loving, hip-hop egotists.
Who is the Beyonce of the group?
*Everyone points to JT Running Man with laughter.
The Kanye of the group?
Group: Ace by unanimous decision.
Tell me about the song you chose for the Roux Black mixtape, “Richie Rich.”
JT Running Man: You know, we really got inspired and decided we gotta kill it for Ru and make sure she knows it was tight. We went into the studio, had no beat at first. Ace makes this beat and then I just started rhyming the hook and it came together perfectly.
With such a huge group, what are the roles everyone plays in the group?
Ace- I’m sort of the leader along with Lexo. I do anything I can put my hands on, rap, produce beats, edit videos. I handle all of the website and business stuff as well.
JT: AKA Beyonce’ I just rap all the time. If there is a song you want to kill, I just go in and do it. I also know a lot of people and am a founding member of the group. I help make connection for the business, too.
Deja: The photographer and the baby brother of the group. I’m the youngest, joint roller, soon to be helping with fashion. Founder of the “Real Nigga Morals” group.
D: I work on the videos and also the photos as well. I help with editing, shooting, helping DJ Maketrix keep things set-up and together as well.
Lexo- I rap. I’m the number 2 behind Ace. I try to fill in the gaps. I take care of a lot of business stuff and I am like the old wise man. I’m the RZA. I just fill in the gaps and do what I can to get these albums out. I am also one of the fashionable parts about the Planes!
Just Pounds: I produce beats and keep everybody out of trouble. I’m kind of the dad of the group but also the A&R.
Listen to “Richie Rich” below and be on the lookout for Planes! As they prepare to take the stage for the second annual fan appreciation showcase on October 2nd at The Oriental Theater. Tickets are available for purchase here.
