Atmosphere at Red Rocks – Recap

Slug & Ant turned out yet another incredible live show when they stopped at SOLD OUT Red Rocks Amphitheater on Friday, August 29th on their current North of Hell tour.

Let me start this off by saying that I am what you may call a die-hard fan – this was my 6th Atmosphere show at I don’t exactly do it like normal people. I bought four tickets the day they went on sale in May, and requested the day off work in July. My three best girlfriends and I showed up in the upper South lot at Red Rocks around 7:30am after a night of very little sleep, set up our tent-like shelter with an air-mattress, mini-grill and way too much booze, cuddled up with some blankets, and went back to sleep (can you blame us?). From then until about four in the afternoon, we spent the day drinking with the other ten people in line, listening to Slug do sound check, and hiding from the off and on wind and rain that the unpredictable late Colorado summer threw at us every other hour.

Finally, IT WAS TIME. We were the first. Shout out to our girl KANDI working the ramp who knew we’d been there all day who made sure we were first in. We ended up second row center and settled in for the show of our lives. Dem Atlas and Prof were up first. These guys both offered a fresh vibe unique from one another, yet definitely dope enough to be considered part of the Rhymesayers family. Unfortunately, since I had been in the lot all day long, my phone was at 15% battery when we finally got to our seats inside the venue, and I wanted to save most, if not all of my battery for Atmosphere, so I didn’t get much of these guys – click the links and scope them – they’re worth your time for sure. Eligh and the Grouch were up next – always consistently sick! They banged out some classics, got the crowd pumped, and had some sick contortionists performing with them, bouncing all over the stage, doing all kinds of crazy stuff.

FINALLY. IT. WAS. TIME.

The best Atmosphere set I have ever seen in my life began. I can only remember one or two songs from recent albums. The rest was strictly old stuff. Scapegoat, Reflections, Lovelife, God Loves Ugly, Trying to Find a Balance, Modern Man’s Hustle, God’s Bathroom Floor, and so much more!!! A few highlights included Slug playing a portion of “Dirty Girl” – a Felt song (a spinoff group made up of Slug & Murs), a special spoken-word version of “the Woman with the Tattooed Hands”, “Say Shh” – a secret song off Sevens Travels – altered to work for Colorado, but what really gave me the chills was when slug played “Flicker” from his latest album for the last song of the night, a song dedicated to his late friend & rapper Eyedea – lighters and cell phones were in the air and the entire crowd was singing along – the energy was out of control. I have goosebumps writing about it right now.

All in all, one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. Maybe it was Red Rocks. Maybe it was Atmosphere. Maybe I’m biased because I love both. Maybe it’s all three. But if you weren’t there, you missed out.

All these pics are from my Instagram – don’t steal! (except the cover photo – that’s obviously a screenshot from Eligh’s video taken from backstage – wish I could have gotten that shot)
