Grimey Gatsby Introduces Valley Hush
Grimey Gatsby Introduces Valley Hush
(Alex Kaye and Lianna Vanicelli)
Willow tree moss bed. Imagine you are in the middle of a magical forest, it is the most perfect temperature, you are swinging high in the coziest hammock, intertwined with something you love. That is what the music feels like. I remember having a similar descriptive conversation with Lianna’s sister the first time I heard that woman play and sing at a lounge in Ferndale, Michigan just a few years ago.
Jess: Tell us how Valley Hush started.
Valley Hush: After realizing that we work really well together in the studio while working on old projects, we decided that we wanted to write together with a fresh, clear focus. We made a few songs and fell in love with the project, which we named Valley Hush.
Jess: Where are your musical inspirations derived from?
Valley Hush: Everything around us. Our songs are all inspired by what we have taken away and learned from experiences. We are inspired by the way a song can carry so much power and emotion and even help heal and open minds.
Jess: You have played a few live shows in Detroit as of recent, reflect on these..
Valley Hush: We recently just started playing live, which has become our favorite part about the project. We have played two shows so far and both have been incredible experiences. We have gotten a really beautiful response from the audience and we couldn’t be more grateful for how the shows are going.
Jess: What makes Valley Hush unique to other currently trending music artists?
Valley Hush: We are sincere and honest. Every song has an intention for positivity and emotional release of some sort. We really try to write for the sake of the listener, not just ourselves. I think a lot of artists are writing songs that are unhealthy for our generation.
Jess: What is your favorite thing about Detroit?
Valley Hush: Watching it grow. Over the last six years, it has bloomed so much and the people here are incredible.
Jess: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Lianna: Detroit, but with the addition of mountains, ocean, and a train system. You did not say it had to be a real place 😉
Alex: That sounds really nice, Lianna.
Jess: How many live instruments are used in making your music?
Valley Hush: Almost everything you hear on the EP was recorded or sampled at Rustbelt Studios. The drums are programmed but a lot of the samples used were recorded ourselves. For the bass lines we used either a real bass guitar or a Moog synth. The guitar parts are all live and a lot of other sounds on the EP are coming from the guitar as well. When we play live, we play with a bassist, Jeff Cuny and drummer, Dave Dionise. They are amazing and help take our music to another level.
Jess: With the New Year just around the corner, what can we expect for 2015?
Valley Hush: We have a ton of things in the works, a music video and our next EP to be released in early 2015 and lots of shows! We are ridiculously excited.
Jess: If you only could live off of one… Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, what would it be?
Lianna: If my body would allow it, I would live off of peanut butter, bananas, and chocolate.
Alex: I would combine them and make a meal in the middle of the day called brunchinner, where I eat the contents of all three meals in one sitting… In under a minute.
Jess: What do you like to do when you are not creating music?
Lianna: Spend time in nature and with loved ones. Go to yoga classes as much as possible. Write, reflect, watch movies, hang with friends, and go to shows!
Alex: It’s normally all that I do since it’s one of those passion & career things for me. However, when I start to go crazy working on something I usually take a break to watch a movie or do something crafty. Love to go out and see shows as well.
Jess: Do you have plans to play outside of Michigan in the future?
Valley Hush: Absolutely. We want to go as far as this project will take us <3
