Who’s Bad Interview

The ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band called Who’s Bad kicks off a 3 night run in Colorado this weekend!  Starting this Thursday, on 01/08 Who’s Bad will begin their run at Belly Up in Aspen and then traveling down to Colorado Springs on 01/09 to perform at the Stargazer’s Theatre and then wrapping things up in Denver at the Ogden on 01/10.  We had the opportunity to get to know the band a little better before their feet land here in Colorado this weekend.  Check it out!

GG: Give us a little history lesson on how this group came together.

Who’s Bad: We originally formed as a college band at UNC Chapel Hill and we gave the Michael Jackson tribute a try one time. People loved it, and we kept at it, mostly locally at first. But before long we were playing shows all over the US, and in the last ten years, all over the world. It really was a humble college experiment, and it has worked out better than we ever thought it could.

GG: What do you love most about your profession?

Who’s Bad: Being able to play Michael Jackson’s music for fans of the King of Pop; both those that saw him play live and want to relive that experience, and those that never got the chance.

GG: Where is your favorite place to play?

Who’s Bad: We have several favorites. Denver is always one because everyone there from the people to the media to the venue people are always so great to us.

GG: Are there any Michael Jackson songs that you do not perform?

Who’s Bad: There are none that we wouldn’t potentially perform, but there are some that we haven’t played live, mostly his newer stuff (Xcape).

GG: What are your favorite foods?

Who’s Bad: Anything creative and healthy most of the time. Well balanced meals with spice and flavor, lots of veggies. Sometimes it’s good to pig out on something too. No fast foods, they don’t help you perform your best.

GG: What can we expect from y’all in 2015?

Who’s Bad: We’ve got some surprise wrinkles coming to our show in select markets. We can’t say what just yet, but we’re pretty sure fans will be VERY excited when they hear the news and see the show. Sorry I can’t say more yet.

GG: What do you like to do when you are not playing music?

Who’s Bad: Cooking those delicious and healthy meals, compose music and enjoy time with friends and family.

GG: What is the coolest place you have visited to this date?

Who’s Bad: Amsterdam was really cool. We were invited to play the Tommy Hilfiger Europe Christmas Party in 2012. Now, THAT was a party!

GG: Besides Michael Jackson, who else inspires you musically?

Who’s Bad: So many artists… from Led Zeppelin to the Beatles, Igor Stravinsky to John Coltrane, Kool and the Gang to Jamiroquai. Collectively as a band, we have so many musical influences, but I think we all come back to the classic pop, funk, blues and jazz.

GG: Are any of you willing to admit any fears or phobias you have?

Who’s Bad: Some of us like traveling more than others, but we’re pretty loose and very well-traveled, and I don’t think there’s really any phobias among us that stick out.

GG: How many hours per week do you dedicate to practice?

Who’s Bad: We play so many shows a year that our practice time is pretty limited. But playing 140 plus dates a year keeps everyone tight. When we change up our show routine, we’ll dedicate plenty of practice time for that.

GG: Who has been in the performing arts business the longest?

Who’s Bad: How long? Hmm, I can tell you that collectively we have over 50 years of experience in performing arts and music. The longest I think would have to be Jobel.

GG: If you were selected president, what is the first thing that you would do?

Who’s Bad: Hmm. I’d make it a requirement for everyone to learn a musical instrument in school.

Come one, come all, and let us celebrate the King of Pop!  See you in Denver this weekend ladies and gents!
