LAKE EFFECT + SUMAC TAPE
Writers and readers of the Grimey Gatsby travel far and wide. Recently, GG was in the crowd at The Entry on 1st Ave for a dual EP release in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Thanks to artists like Atmosphere and those in the Rhymesayers crew, the Twin City rap community is no secret. And deeper down can be found a tight-knit group of hardworking MCs where collaboration and creative integration are commonplace.
Collaboration would be a theme of the night. Opening acts Manny Phesto, Moonlight Grammar, and Omen cooperated to build a foundational chill in the cozy club as word spread that Tony Phantom, one of the headlining MCs, had become a father of a newborn daughter the night before. The night gained a tone of special celebration, in addition to being a career event.
Tony Phantom and Shelltoe, respectively releasing the EPs Lake Effect and Sumac Tape, took the stage around 11. By interweaving tracks through a joint set, Phantom and Toe emitted a relaxed atmosphere that was complemented by crisp and clear delivery. Each MC stayed on-point and a nostalgic “lake vibe” stretched out under the blue lights through consistent pacing, light content, and clever punchlines.
Several up and coming Twin City MCs were seen during the show, supporting Toe, Phantom, and the Phantom Baby. Towards the end of the evening Sean Anonymous, Philip Morris, and a few randos even jumped on-stage to help perform their hit “Can’t See” and cypher til the closing bell.
