American Borderline – Ibiza
“AMERICAN BORDERLINE” is a party movement introduced by American student fraternities. Opening was on Thursday June 11th and happening every Thursday at Es Paradis, “American Borderline” advices to be psychologically prepared for the pandemonium that is to befall after you attend this party as the show is not for the fainthearted.
With music by Dani Zaro and Kate Ear this concept is new to the island, that has been around on major clubs through Europe, “American Borderline” promises that you will jump around, spin, get soaked, and enjoy the best risqué party on the island.
I arrived into Es Paradis just before 3am, walked up the short stairs and witnessed absolutely no one in my line of sight, but I followed the sound to the center stage and that is where I saw a baseball player and a football player in stilts looking to the back of the club, where surrounded by numerous cheerleaders and girls in different sports outfits, kneeled in a prayer-like manner to a balloon rendering of the statue of liberty.
Then the DJ drops some of the dirties EDM I’ve heard, the likes of DJ Mark Doyle, Real Lines, Elderbrook, Skrillex & Diplo… The girls start dancing across three different stages, and the football player in stilts starts a routine of fire breathing. Out of nowhere, the voice that was introducing the show comes out of the back of a U.S. Flag and it turns out that our hype man for the night was going to be the joker from the Christopher Nolan movie. To be honest at first I was cringing so much because he was trying to get everybody’s hands up in the air and out of the sixty people on the floor about ten where obeyin his “Clap! Clap! Clap!” command he used to build the dirty drops of bass.
Es Paradis was decorated with giant blow ups of Uncle Sam, Statue of Liberty, Football tunnels, American flags, and toilet paper hanging from almost everywhere giving the illusion that you where part of the Project X movie. The only place where Chukie the doll will chases you with a chainsaw, to then be saved by Spiderman. This two had a brief fight on stage then brought up two girls from the audience… and as you might have expected, they turn out to be two male stripers. Shouts from the girls in the audience and joyful high fives between the two girls on stage brought a smile to my face.
Our master of ceremonies, the joker, who kept hyping the crowd with an entertaining French accent, kept shouting things like “Shots! Shots! Shots!” and “If you love sex, MAKE SOME NOISE!” Then took the crowd to a stage where he performed a routine with (doctor evil voice) “freaking lasers.”
The last show I caught was when seven girls in American flag bikinis stepped out and jumped in Jacuzzis, dancing provocatively and getting everybody within reach soaked.
Through out the night, albeit the show was entertaining, I saw a short man well over his sixties jubilantly enjoying himself without the necessity of drugs. This old man in a Hawaiian styled shirt and khakis kept reaching out to the girls on stage, and pantomiming eating them out by sticking his tongue out every time one of the beautiful girls spread her legs in front of him, or watching from afar as couple pretended to have sex inside a bobble. At one point, I was more entertained by his childlike actions than, the sexy wet bodies on the stage. I could only imagine what was happening in his head—I was the voyeur of the voyeur—he was like a child watching fireworks for the first time.
This wild-eyed old man, with strange child like wonder, is currently linked to the culture because human social life is a process in which individuals internalize the meaning of public messages. Although I’ve heard stories of orgies and sex parties from the Love & Peace generation, and perhaps even further back then that. In this case the oversexalization of the show, mixed with the individuals voyeurism, and perhaps sexual repression, is the only way I can try to justify his callous behavior, and also justify why I saw nothing wrong on his conversion of privet understanding into public expression.
Or maybe I’m just desensitized… who the fuck knows.
If you get a chance, check out American Borderlines at Es Paradis in San Antonio Ibiza. The night was a shit show, but it was still a good show.
