Sage Francis – Denver recap
Tonight, Sage Francis was a solo act – and when I say solo, I mean Sage was completely alone on stage except for his MacBook. I found this pretty remarkable, as I attend a lot of hip hop shows and not many on Sage’s level perform by themselves with their laptop. Sporting black pants, black shirt, a white scarf over his head, a Strange Famous flag he wore as a cape, some bling in the shape of his own face, and heavy boots, Sage took the stage around 11pm – an early show for Cervantes. If you’re familiar with how often Sage’s hair/facial hair changes, tonight he came with a completely bald head and his signature bushy-ass beard – and we wouldn’t have him any other way. He immediately kicked off his set with an oldie but goodie, and one of my favorites – Escape Artist – getting the crowd super pumped for what was to come. He tore through his entire set, playing lots of new material from his latest album, Copper Gone, as well as a wide variety the old stuff I love, like Sea Lion (and anything off of A Healthy Distrust), Personal Journals, and so much more. It was an intimate show – a pretty small crowd for Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom – but that’s just how I like it, and I think that’s how Sage likes it too. He really gets up in everyone’s face and makes each song a personal experience. Don’t sleep on getting to see this guy if you’ve got the chance!
