Tyler the Creator – Recap
On the momentum of Cherry Bomb, his latest album, the symbol of Odd Future rode into Fort Collins last Friday. The crowd was ready to go wild. Joined by Jasper Dolphin, Tyler did not disappoint.
Stepping onstage a bit before 10, Tyler announced that he was tired, had never heard of Fort Collins, and was there to represent Boulder. Attendees of course booed his ass. It was clearly all part of the plan as a suddenly supercharged Tyler started up a tour through his catalog.
He had something for everybody on the set list.
A hazy, jazzy, drummy atmosphere was building as Tyler pushed out love songs like “Bitch suck dick”, “IFHY”, and “She” (a song about stalking women, during which fans screamed “we want Frank Ocean!”). It made for the perfect setup for his latest hit “FUCKING YOUNG/PERFECT,” which brought the house down, likely resonating in a special way with the 16+ crowd.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear “48,” a bleak look into the flipside of drug rap. The Creator even brought out “Yonkers,” which in case you haven’t listened lately, sounds better than ever.
Tyler’s stuff is controversial but it feels good to see people excited about music. One lucky fan even got to spit a verse onstage. The best hecklers in the house were standing next to me, doing their part to keep the energy up by yelling out “Tyler, you can’t sing!” during the slow songs and “Fuck you Tyler, we hate you!” when he tried to talk to the audience. And they knew every word to every song.
Although there was no encore (Odd Future? Encore?), the crowd was satisfied to end the show on “Tamale”. The nature and design of the Aggie put the audience up close and personal with the performance. These listeners were into the art, a fact that was appreciated by the artist. Don’t be surprised to see Tyler, the Creator pass through FoCo again.
