Holding Court with Miguel A. Nuñez Jr.
Miguel A. Nuñez Jr. is a busy man. He always has been. Whether on location currently shooting an upcoming zombie film, producing television shows and specials, or writing behind the scenes, you cannot stop Him. You couldn’t even if you wanted to. His list of film credits is impressive. The Return of the Living Dead (1985), Harlem Nights (1989), Lethal Weapon 3 (1992), Life (1999), Juwanna Mann (2002), Kickin’ It Old Skool (2007), and Black Dynamite (2009) are only a few. The 2000’s saw Miguel on Joey, Matt LeBlanc’s spinoff when Friends ended, and creating, writing, producing, and starring on the sitcom Belle’s (2013).
Like most actors find out, it turns out that holding down a job when you are constantly having to take off for “promising” auditions, does not keep you employed long while chasing your dream. Many people quit and cannot deal with the rejection, the schedule, the expenses, and things that ultimately demoralize them to continuing the pursuit. Not with this Actor.
Eventually, something opened up, allowing Miguel the freedom he needed to pursue his dream; “I got a job as a Laker’s Season Seat Salesman. One of the perks to the Top Salesman was dinner at Owner’s table, and seats in the Owner’s box. You could bring two guests, as long as they were girls. So I would take the finest, most beautiful around. And win Top Salesman every week.”
This work ethic was noticed by many, and ultimately Miguel was regularly sitting with Dr. Jerry Buss, and, “We became best friends. He took me all over the world and believed in me. He helped me tremendously. I owe so much to him.”
This friendship lasted until Dr. Buss’ unfortunate passing, but His belief in Miguel was, and still is a daily motivator for Him to never give up in anything He does. “He always taught me to push myself. Be prepared, and fight ‘til the last breath for the things I want, and I would succeed.”
Miguel also says that a chance meeting was life changing for him, “I had met the producer, Joel Silver, while homeless on the streets of Downtown LA. He helped me a lot as well, and is an amazing guy. I took advantage of every opportunity, and excelled by doing what Dr. Buss taught me, and that was to be prepared.”
If anyone thinks that Miguel is in any way going to slow down, they are wrong. Dead wrong. “Right now I’m shooting a Zombie movie, and will be shooting Juwanna Mann 2 soon.”
Not busy enough? What has He written lately?
“I just finished writing a film with Eddie Murphy.”
I asked Him how He feels about his success. His answer?
“I have been tremendously BLESSED.”
