Mike Giant – Black Book Gallery – recap
This past Saturday we were able to catch the “Rocky Mountain High” Mike Giant art show at the Black Book Gallery in Denver. We’ve been waiting to see this show for over a month and have been avid fans of GIANT’s work and design over the years. Best known for his tattoo flash pages these days, Mike Giant was the originator of Rebel8 clothing line in 2003. He is well respected in the street culture world as “GIANT” the graf writer and has put his name all over the country.
His touch on his own roots in architecture school are easy to see in this latest show and are a very crisp touch to the amazing line work he is known for. We took in the flash pages first before working our way through “Bring it” which is a drawing of Mike by Mike as a shotgun target. His street touch on the crisp line work is an amazing piece in the current situations of today….every day it feels like you have to be ready to bring it on. The words and font around the main focus pieces was passively bringing new images into your head and thoughts into your stream of consciousness.
After taking in some music selections from Mike as he curated the sound for the show, we got to speak with our attendees about their thoughts on the show and many of them have been long time fans of GIANT. Mike spoke about some of his joys these days in music, travel, and tattooing. His focused touch on his art and his gentle words make it easy to understand the talent that flows from his pen. Humble, huge, and respectful are the GIANT. Make sure to stop by Black Book Gallery and take in the pieces first hand…..grab a print and keep it Gatsby.
