Rakim @ Herman’s Hideaway – Recap
Rakim chose a venue as old school and authentic as himself and his music when he came to Denver – Herman’s Hideaway was packed to the brim on Saturday night as the God MC made his way to the Mile High City.
Rakim came out around a quarter after midnight, showing love by giving out several high fives before even addressing the crowd. He began by showing us both his oldest and newest work, starting off with hits from both his 1987 album Paid In Full and 2009’s The Seventh Seal. Next he did “Guess Who’s Back” and “It’s Been A Long Time” before diving into his older work with Eric B. Of his four classic albums from 1987-1992, he performed hits like “In The Ghetto”, “Move The Crowd”, “Don’t Sweat The Technique” and “Addicted: Truth Hurts”.
Rakim has never been an energetic performer as his demeanor mimics his music. The strength of his stage show is in his rhymes. This was evident when he performed “Microphone Fiend” and “Paid in Full”. Neither song is catchy per se due to lack of choruses, yet the crowd of Denver hip hop heads recited every lyric enthusiastically to the delight of the God MC. If and when he returns – I’ll be there.
