Dave Chappelle – Red Rocks recap
Last Thursday at Red Rocks, Dave Chappelle came to town for another stop on his national tour. Sold out crowd, great weather, and comedy always have a proper fit in the Colorado scene. The traffic out to the event was nothing short of “sold out.” Once we hit the exit on 70 we saw a line of cars. Chappelle finished up his residency in New York and took out on tour this year playing stops all over America. Once Red Rocks was announced……….we knew we would be attending to see this legend bring down the house.
The evening was set up by great weather and the music started early on the stage. The crowd was massive and there early in anticipation. The opening act lightened the mood and the announcements began……”Rule #1 – No phones, videos, checking texts, snapchats, calls, seeing if the babysitter is okay, or anything else that involved electronics. Rule #2 If we see your phone you will be escorted out…..no phones!! Rule #3 Have a great time” and about every 10 minutes there after and posted on every part of Red Rocks imaginable. We were fine with it…..but we did see about 16 people get escorted out of Red Rocks that evening. The security was double staffed….and there were on point with the “no phones” rule.
DJ Trauma was dropping tracks and once the lights dimmed………it was all Chappelle.
His tour has brought about tons of new material and many current events. This set was nothing short of legend. Not only does he bring the new spin from his fame and fortune to light but he explains many things from the “not normal life” sector. If to open a bit of the issues that made him take some time out of the spotlight are not reflected upon and open game…….and we could tell that he “went easy” on the crowd also. Three or four times there was a person that would get up to walk through the seats, or walk passed the stage with a beer and Chappelle held back….as if he had decided it’s less about the crowd and more about the material. We enjoyed the normal jabs he threw at the passer by’s…..”Oh another white guy with a beer and a beard…..only anothe 8,000 of them here tonight….”
His set ranged from his home life to the Cosby rapes to Gay marriage to private and public school issues to the usual racists jokes and stories…..and he even threw in some foot fetish fun too. Just remember you can’t rape feet…..and he adds value to his kids lunches when he takes a bite out of them high AF at night. The stage was a bit smokey as he was taking down blunts and cigs during the set to applause of the crowd. He spoke on his social experiment of sending one of his sons to private school and the other to public school. And he tickled the Coors loving crowd with a great line……”Budweiser tastes like poor white people problems to me…but what do I know about cheap beer.”The Rocks were laughing all night and the crowd enjoyed another epic set from the legend of comedy Dave Chappelle…..make sure to get out and catch him on tour while you can.
