#TheLightsReturn: Phoenix Lights 2016
It happened again…the strange phenomenon where the lights returned in Phoenix! Although this time, it wasn’t part of a government cover up, it was Relentless Beats throwing down and were “back at it again” with their one of the best, baller, dope ass parties! On April 2nd-3rd, the Phoenix Lights was certainly a festival that was a feast for the eyes! If you didn’t know, the show was named after a series of mysteries UFO lights that spread across the sky in Phoenix, back in 1997, and the theme fits the show perfectly! When I was 12 years old, I experienced the original Phoenix lights as they happened right before my eyes. As this part may sounds silly to some, but ever since then, it opened my eyes to the vast universe that we live in. From that day on I started to question everything I knew, and it opened my mind up to the endless possibilities. This two day festival gave me the same goosebumps as it flooded our bodies with euphoria, down at Margaret T. Hance Park in Downtown Phoenix.
At 3:00 when the doors opened, there was a rush of bass lovers eager to let loose and show off their flashy, anything goes ensemble! They really put their heart and soul into creating one of a kind pieces to stand out, but all unite as one. Day one’s lineup highlighted DJs 4B, BTSM, Eric Prydz, Illenium, SNBRN, Yellow Claw,
and the headliner Kaskade. Day two was just as bumping with Bakermat, Claude VonStroke, Cut Snake, Dr. Fresch, Drezo, Ephwurd, Excision, Ghastly, MK, Tritonal, Troyboi and DJ Snake! All of the artists played out some killer sets, with over the top light shows mixed with a little pyrotechnics! There were two stages, and the main stage had the ultimate dream world light shows, while the smaller stage had a crazy octopus/shark creature surrounding the stage, created by LED displays and giant rubbery octopus arms that wobbled around. Shit went hard people went all out, and dressed to impress was an understatement.
The whole festival went off without a hitch, except some hiccups with the sound cutting out during Ephwurd’s set. They more than kept their cool by joking around with the crowd, and started giving love to the fans who brought their one of a kind totems. Some of the more memorable ones were the Palm Tree, The Jellyfish, the #FindStewie, and of course the Will Twerk on Stage sign. Even though they kept their cool, they did seem like they weren’t sure if they should stay on stage or not. Regardless of what happened they stuck it out, everything was fixed after a few minutes and Ephwurd ended up playing one of the baddest sets to the crowd. Even gastly brought up a little “alien” (his 8 yr old nephew) to say what’s up to everyone.Yellow Claw also made the crowd go wild each time the beat drop, creating a bubble of utopia that we were all apart of!
The Relentless Rangers aka festival heroes were also such a fun crowd to see out there helping fans and not only being a safety team but enjoying the show as well while they were dancing their hearts out, spreading love, unity and respect. There was also a Silent Disco there, sectioned off with people silently jamming out with headphones on. We didn’t partake in that part, as it seemed a bit awkward for some reason. The few people who did wander in there seemed to have a good time though!
Overall, this was another success held by Relentless Beats, and everyone seemed to enjoy the show. The VIP fans who had bottle service were exceptionally living the high life, as their viewing spot was raised above the crowd, creating the perfect view! Grimey Gatsby was super stoked to be apart of the second edition of Phoenix Lights, and it was truly a pleasantly immersive experience.
