0Modest Mouse & Brand New – recap
Modest Mouse and Brand New’s sold-out show at Red Rocks on June 29th was certainly one for the books. The weather was perfect and you could feel the energy as soon as you pulled onto the road leading to the parking lot.
Modest Mouse began at almost exactly 7:30, right on schedule. The two bands were co-headlining and there were no openers. I haven’t listened to much Modest Mouse but that certainly wasn’t the story for the crowd. Everyone was singing along and new every word. It was easy to groove to and the vibes were good – a great performance that I enjoyed regardless of not being a huge fan.
Brand New took the stage right around 9:15 with flowers tied to the mic stands. I don’t know what’s up with this, but I really like it. I haven’t listened to much of Brand New’s more recent music (after the Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me), so I was definitely unfamiliar with a lot of their set, but let me tell you – Jesse Lacey was in rare form. I’ve seen them once before at the Fillmore in 2010 and it was nothing compared to this. His voice was on point, hitting every note, just killing it. Aside from mostly newer material, they played some classics from the Devil and God, Deja Entendu, but sadly, nothing form Your Favourite Weapon. The highlight for me, without a doubt, was Play Crack the Sky – Jesse was alone on stage with his guitar until the end of the song and the whole crowd sang along – seriously magical and an amazing start to Red Rocks 2016 season.
