Sounds of Summer: SoCal Concerts August 2016
When it comes to music, its no secret that Southern California is a prime place to catch great performances. It is, after all, home to Hollywood (the land of entertainment) – and Los Angeles in particular is widely acknowledged as having some of the most well-known concert venues in existence. Whether the location is large enough to accommodate over 90,000 people (the LA Memorial Coliseum), known to provide incredible acoustics (the Hollywood Bowl and Greek Theater), or legendary because of Hollywood history and lore (The Viper Room), there’s no denying that Southern Californians are spoiled musically.
As a native Angeleno, I can say with firsthand knowledge that this over-abundance is actually overwhelming on occasion – especially during summer. If you enjoy attending concerts (which I do), there are sometimes way too many decisions to make. With so many great shows to choose from, how many can you realistically attend? Should you head to a smaller venue for a more intimate performance? Splurge on tickets to for a popular mainstream artist? Check out an older band – one that you may never have the opportunity to see live again? And the complications don’t stop there; because unless you have unlimited funds, a really reliable hook-up, or can be in multiple places at the same time, its likely that you’ll eventually have to decide on one show out of several that you’d like to attend.
Difficult as this may be for concert-lovers, there are ways to make these decisions easier on yourself. Over time, I’ve found that half the battle is won simply by staying up-to-date on which performances are coming up well in advance. Since this method has worked so well for me, I decided to share my personal roster of some noteworthy SoCal shows that are scheduled throughout the rest of the month. Before you continue, please keep the following in mind: this compilation is mainly focused on events being held in the Los Angeles/Southern California area, it is by no means comprehensive, and I’m fully aware that not everyone shares my views on which concerts are considered “noteworthy.” However, I did try to keep it fairly eclectic. There are a few festivals that include multiple acts and, along with the more “mainstream” artists/bands, you’ll also find some that aren’t quite as well-known. There are even some performances that might be best – and most kindly – described as “nostalgic” (or, you know, “cheesy;” whichever you prefer). Best attempts were made to incorporate a little something for everyone, so I hope you’ll all find at least a couple of shows that appeal to you!
