Medium Rare- Aloha, Ohana!
In Hawaii, Ohana means family, but in Denver, Ohana means lunch. We recently stumbled upon Ohana Island Kitchen- a, literal, hole in the wall that serves out some delicious, authentic Hawaiian food that will send you straight to the Big Island. The outdoor “to-go window” restaurant is on the side of The Truffle Table in LoHi and is only open for lunch, Tuesday- Saturday, 11-2. The chalkboard menu is limited to a few traditional Hawaiian dishes. When we got up to the window, we couldn’t help but want to order everything just to try all the different flavors that they offer. Ohana is quickly becoming a popular stop for the local lunch rush, so get there early or risk your favorite dish being sold out for the day.
After ordering, we loaded up our drinks and chopsticks and grabbed a spot at one of the two picnic tables outside of the window; within minutes our food was up and we were ready to chow down. We started with the spicy poké bowl, delicious marinated raw tuna served over white rice with onion and sliced avocado. We followed that with the pulled pork sliders served on sweet Hawaiian rolls and finished it off with the macaroni salad, Aloha food coma .
Ohana is unique and quickly establishing itself as being one of the cooler places to enjoy a quick bite to eat in LoHi. So if you are in need of an island getaway, take a hit of that Maui Wowie and get yourself over to Ohana, you will forget you’re a mile above sea level, served up Medium Rare.
