COACHELLA weekend 2 – 2017
We drove hours to get to Coachella on Thursday, 4/20. Once we arrived, we instantly started to wander around to explore the campgrounds because some people in our group were Coachella virgins! We quickly realized one thing we forgot to pack…and ended up purchasing a $17 pack of cigarettes at the general store. As we were venturing around the car camping, we passed the silent disco which was packed full! Heading back to camp, someone was already so faded that they were butt naked, chatting up with us about how he, “lost his pants!” Right then, two cops on horses rode right towards us, but surprisingly didn’t bother to stop and hassle the guy. That night, we took the most refreshing shower of our lives! Besides that, our neighbors were very friendly, and eager to all help each other set up camp. We finished putting our tent just in time to watch crowds of people gather on the hill just to cheer, because the sun finally rested for the day.
Day two, is when the music began, and we started with Broods, who had an incredible presence on stage. After that we saw Oh Wonder, who was hands down, the best band that played during the day! One girl in our group joked that she can die happy, now that she saw Oh Wonder in person. We explored some of the art installations, and stumbled across a nostalgic contraption called the Energy Playground, which slowly charges your cell phone if you bounce back and forth on a see-saw with your buddy. Later in the day, Travis Scott drew in a huge crowd and people were even standing on the light poles just to get a good view. Empire of the Sun had a large crowd too, it was an epic sight to see. ScHoolboy Q killed it, and the smoke was super thick in the air, as everyone toked up. At this point, we checked our phone, and we had already walked 7.2 miles so far just that day!
Do you guys remember when we spotted Dr. Fresch at Phoenix Lights, whipping up some chicken and waffles at The Spot? Well, we found the Spot again (aka the same group who serves the infamous Frankie’s Pizza)! Thank goodness our favorite food vendor was at Coachella, serving us with gourmet pizza, hot fries and ice cold lemonade with berries in it. Staying hydrated at this festival is a number one priority! It was easy to get overheated, and want to crawl back to camp, but the Yuma tent was another great escape to the heat while still staying on festival grounds. They kept it nice and cold, and had giant beds that spanned across the room. In the daytime, sleepy fans extended past the beds, to lay on the floor, absorbing the chill from the wood floors, feeling the bass in their chest. This time around we weren’t able to bring the camera setup, but we did catch some of the highlights on the iPhone. The important part is that the music was loud, the faces were pretty, and the waffles were fresh!
Martin Garrix was great, especially when they played their top hit, “In the Name of Love.” What was great about having two great performers in a row, is that if you stick around, you can get a great view for the second artist! This is exactly what we did after Martin Garrix, and got right in the front to see Gucci Mane who put on such a memorable set. Gucci Mane brought out ASAP Rocky, 50 Cent, and other special guests. After that, we checked out the Do Lab and got soaked with the water soaker. After Netsky, we were just about to leave, when Skrillex popped up as the surprise guest artist! That was a very special treat, as the Do Lab is a small stage, so you can get a great view no matter where you are. Walking back to camp, we chuckled as we saw some piles of poop with glitter all over it, left from the police horses. Speaking of the police, the presence of law enforcement was tight, yet we only saw one girl actually getting arrested the entire weekend. We want to give a shoutout to the Coachella staff, and the police enforcement, that helped everyone stay safe.
One thing is certain when you go to Coachella, you’re bound to miss a band you wanted to see because it is so easy to lose track of time here! We missed part of Porter Robinson and Madeon, but still caught the last half of their performance. It was bittersweet because they announced that Coachella 2017 was the last time they were performing together! Porter almost choked up as he was explaining how Madeon waved goodbye to him during one of their last songs. They are such a great duo together and the song, “Shelter” left goosebumps crawling down our spine! Galantis put on a great performance, hyping up the crowd, especially with their Peanut Butter Jelly Song. After that we had to make the heart wrenching decision to skip Marshmello, in order to catch Kendrick Lamar, since we had not seen Kendrick before. He put on a great show, but by the end of Sunday, our legs felt like noodles and we were ready to call it a weekend! It was such a blast to see such amazing artists, eat great food, and enjoy California for the weekend. Coachella 2017, was such a success and we created memories of a lifetime!
