Global Dance Festival Denver

Last weekend, Denver’s Global Dance Festival really set the bar for future festivals! There were so many surprises that unfolded throughout the weekend, with something new around each corner. Even though Global was moved to its new location, at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, everything seemed to work out. Not only did it feature a multi-stage setup, food trucks, and a silent disco, but it was also a mini carnival as well, with all these crazy rides and a ferris wheel spread out throughout the festival!

When we arrived on the first day, we were blown away by the art installations spread out across the festival grounds. Some of the most memorable ones were the life-sized fidget spinners, the Discopella, and the giant dragonflies in the VIP garden lighting up the night sky with flames. The weather was great with a sunny afternoon to start, till the clouds slowly rolled in and it only sprinkled just a tiny bit towards the end of the night.

Asadi really brought the heat and set the vibe for the entire weekend! We laughed when someone in our group said how the bass rattled their porta potty lock, right open! We quickly noticed that some stages virtually had no VIP areas, and others (like the main stage) had it set up where VIP was the only way to go! We also noticed that in the beginning, we would refer to the map often to orient ourselves with how the stages were setup because not all of the stages were clearly labeled. It’s okay because by day two, we got the hang of the layout and were walking around like we owned the place!

We checked out Zeek Beats at the Tundra stage, and the crowd was already hyped up! The one that got the crowd really jumping, was the remix by A$AP Ferg, “New Level”. When we found ourselves at the Northern Lights Stage, we were blown away at the strategic placement of the carnival ride called The Genesis, which whips you around in a circle. Once you are on the ride, it is literally facing the Northern Lights stage, so you wouldn’t miss one minute of the show!

Once we arrived at the Amazon Stage, we were explained how the silent disco headphones worked. There were multiple DJ’s at once, and on your headset, you can easily switch to the three different stations. This area had a chill vibe, with vines wrapping around large blown up columns. It was trippy to see that if you stood towards the front and center of the dance area, you could catch yourself projected right back at you on a large screen that covered the DJ booth. Bijou drew in a big crowd, Kaskade was amazing and we were loving the fireworks towards the end of the night!

The food trucks there were abundant, but we found ourselves going back to the same one, which was featured Latin-Asian grub, called Chuey Fu’s! Out of the three items we tried, the chicken teriyaki with the peanut sauce was so droolworthy! As we were eating our tempura shrimp, we met three ladies who loved it so much that they actually tried everything on the menu over the past two days.

Saymyname was playing at the Tundra stage and security had to escort this one chick to the medical tent because she had a knot the size of a lime on her forehead! Apparently that’s what happens when you are headbanging too hard and hit the fence. Green Velvet also crushed it as he put out an amazing performance, truly taking the crowd to La La Land! It was unfortunate that Porter Robinson and Nero were playing at the same time, but it’s inevitable for those things to happen at these type of festivals. It’s essentially a good problem to have, but it was bitter sweet. Porter Robinson really put on a moving performance, even dedicating one song to Monica Rose, a beloved fan who lost her life way too early. Porter played a great blend of his classic hits, with others that we were not familiar with.

Overall, it was a great place to reunite with friends from near and far! We think that all the new additions to this year’s Global Dance Festival could not fit at Red Rocks, so I think it was a good move on their part. We created memories that last forever and this weekend was definitely one for the books! We danced our hearts out, and we hope you had a good squad and equally good times! Well, until next time headbangers, stay grimey!
