Hike Your Own Hike: Runyon Canyon

2000 N Fuller Ave, Los Angeles, CA, 90046 6am-6pm

LA Parks Website – Runyon Canyon

Runyon Canyon is one of the busier Los Angeles hiking areas due to its proximity to the city. It is also somewhere you can spot celebrities with their trainers doing early morning treks to the top of Runyon. Parking here is not easy. I recommend a small car to parallel park along a small street, or take an Uber directly to your entrance. There are bicycle racks at the gate.

The South entrance is at the North end of Fuller Ave, there is a small yoga area on the left just past the trailhead entrance coming from this direction. From the North entrance off Mulholland Dr, Runyon Canyon Rd is to the East.

Runyon offers a variety of difficulty when it comes to trails. Runyon Canyon Rd is the easiest, “Star Trail” (East Trail) is medium, & “Hero’s Trail” (West Trail) is the most difficult. The West trails are a bit more of a grade, doing the 2.5 mile loop counter clockwise is a progressive workout than starting clockwise.

There is a series of stairs leading up to the top with some amazing views of Los Angeles, on a clear enough day, even to Catalina Island. The Hollywood Sign is viewable from different points & elevations throughout the hike, making for a lovely backdrop.

Once you make it to the top, there is a fence along the edge that has become a “Love Lock” area with some beautiful, panoramic views.

Dogs! Everywhere you look, there are dogs, & most of them seem to understand their rules, whether their owners do or not. Runyon has off-leash dog areas, if this is a problem, do not bring your dog. There are also poop bag stations & water fountains along the way, but bring your own as this is a very busy area. Dog walkers with 5-10 dogs at a time is a normal sighting, as well as random dogs running their own workout schedule.

The Lloyd Wright “Headley-Handley House” is at 3003 Runyon Canyon Rd. Errol Flynn threw legendary parties here in the golden age of Hollywood.

There are 6 Geocaches hidden here, I’ve found 2, & keep checking for the others.
